The coast & the Route des Tamarins
The Route des Tamarins links the West and South smoothly. Along the coast, watch for sudden showers and rush-hour traffic around Saint-Denis and Le Port.
The Highlands & the cirques
Cilaos, Salazie, the Maïdo: narrow, winding roads. Brake gently downhill and take hairpin bends with care. A compact car is far more comfortable up there.
Fords & the rainy season
Never cross a flooded ford. The weather changes fast from one slope to another, so keep a safe margin and adapt your speed.
